Working for weeks and weeks on litigation until late at night and under huge time pressure? Check.
It’s 8:30pm on a Friday night and I just watched the partner I work for walk out of the building with a junior male colleague to take the client out to dinner. Did I want to go? Probably not. But then I wasn’t invited so it doesn’t really matter what I want.
Unbelievable, and it’s definitely not the first time it’s happened!

To all those wondering why women are less represented at the upper echelons of most professional services partnerships, this makes for a sobering read. The solution is far from clear, but to the anonymous tipster: thanks for writing in – the more stories like this we can publish, the more people will become conscious of how prevalent these stupid (and sometimes unintentional) workplace exclusions are. As for tonight? We’d suggest it’s time to go home, put your feet up and leave that next witness statement til Monday morning.

Do something about it. Tell your supervisor that you want to meet the client and ask him to facilitate that. Did it occur to you that other people at your firm are probably taking a proactive role in managing their own careers and developing their own networks? Oh wait – it’s just the boys club beating you down, right?
Maybe female senior associate was discriminated against because she lacks the personality to put in front of clients. I know I have done that. It has nothing to do with sex, and title doesn’t equal entertaining ability. I’m not putting a boring colleague in front of my clients.
Don’t be sore. The world needs grinders too.
I’ve seen this happen the other way. A female partner invites female juniors and not male juniors. Go figure.
This story is so devoid of context, it is meaningless.
