Slopping Out: Mallesons Fail Jail Now Facing Tenancy Squeeze in Melbourne

Posted by The Spy | Posted in Firm Gossip, Mallesons Stephen Jaques | Posted on 10.30am

A scene from Malleson’s Melbourne office yesterday
It was reported in May that female inmates at an Irish penitentiary were being forced to share over-crowded cells:

Thirty female prisoners – including two pregnant inmates – were “crammed” into 10 single cells in Limerick Prison last week, according to figures. The cells measure around 13ft by 7ft and include a double bunk bed, a partially screened toilet and, if necessary, a mattress for a third person. “It is not acceptable for 30 women to be crammed into cells designed for 10,” said Tom Delaney, information officer of the POA.  He said overcrowding was a particular problem in prisons like Cork and Mountjoy where inmates have to “slop out” in front of each other.

This serious issue of ‘slopping out’ in front of fellow prisoners appears to be a problem shared by staffers in the Melbourne office of Mallesons. According to one Mallesons spy:

Mallesons Melbourne are vacating level 43 and returning the space to the landlord - leaving 42 (Business Services) and 44 to 49, with reception on 50. There is only enough space on the other floors, though, if the graduates and seasonal clerks sit at the secretaries desks (although since they’ve cut the no of secretaries, there are a lot of spare secretary desks).

Cue eye-brows being raised.  It’s a slop-out! If this claim is true, suspicions must certainly be raised as to whether the Mallesons Fail Jail was simply a ruse to save on rental costs.  Or… that a whole floor of workers has somehow disappeared…
