We thought erotica and lawyering was a marriage made in hell, but there is a certain DLA partner who might have something to say about that.
Quite remarkably, the porn-themed rebranding earned Blake Dawson (the law firm) an industry award. Rebranding website www.rebrand.com considered the shortening of the firm’s name as one of the top 100 rebrandings of 2008. In the rebrand.com summary of the rebranding, the following was written:
Challenge – The firm wanted to stand out both for its excellence at law and for its distinctive personality.
Strategy – Principals created a new brand strategy, which centred around the theme “Excellence with Rapport”, a stand out look and feel…
We hope that the judges weren’t confusing the “stand out look and feel” of Blake Dawson, the porn star, in assessing the victor of the rebrand award. On this, one of our readers made the following insightful observation in response to our original post:
Let’s not forget Blake Dawson, the porn star, in all of this. How does he feel about sharing his name with a second tier Australian law firm?
We’re betting he feels just as let down as does the emerging 14yo American singer/actress and stand-up comedian who calls herself Blake Dawson. You can check out her YouTube Channel here. According to her bio:
Blake Dawson, 14, moved from Georgia two years ago to pursue her dream in acting and music. Blake has starred as the lead in several theatre productions coast to coast ranging from “Oliver!” to “Disney Magic”, and has worked closely with Hollywood director, Ron Howard on the set of “Angels and Demons”… With Blake’s Georgia roots, she brings her sweet, humble “Southern Belle” charm that collides with her focused, “Hollywood” determination to create a fresh, original actress and artist from the inside out, which can be seen in her unique personality and vocal style. People who have met Blake Dawson often comment that she is a “breath of fresh air” to this fast-paced industry.
So we’ve got:
- a porn star;
- a 14yo “Southern Belle” singer/actor;
- a “technotronic law firm”.
Meanwhile, we’re not usually concerned about the comings and goings at firms, but after we saw that Blake Dawson property guru Michael Swift had recently departed the firm, the following tip all of a sudden became a bit more relevant. Perhaps even emblematic of a pattern developing.
In late February we received the following edited email from an anonymous Blake Dawson spy:
Maddocks raid on Blake Dawson partnership:
This afternoon it was announced that two of Blake Dawson’s top property / projects partners were leaving the firm for Maddocks: Lisa Chung and Bronwyn Badcock
Lisa joined the partnership on 1 July 1995 and has worked on a wide range of commercial property transactions acting for major government and corporate. She was a board member from 2000 until 2003, when she was appointed an Executive Partner. She served in this capacity until 2005. From 2006 until April 2009, Lisa took on the role of Practice Leader of the Property and Projects Group.
Bronwyn Badcock became a partner on 1 July 2005.
This came as a complete surprise to the partnership and is quite a big move by Maddocks on the top tier!

Maddocks had to do something to fill the gap left by the 2 previous occupants of those partnership slots, whom it is believed both moved to greener pastures at TressCox
Which partners left or tresscox?
Martyn Tier and Christopher Connolly
