Following from yesterday’s post revealing a considerable drop in the number of vacation clerkships being offered by major Australian law firms, we can today reveal an analogous drop in graduate recruitment.

Alarmingly, it appears that law firms are expecting a protracted downturn as a result of the GFC.

Our friends at AFR published the following graduate intake statistics for major Australian law firms on 4/09 (see below).

Based on these statistics and compared with 2009 levels, Clayton Utz’s graduate recruitment will drop by 17% in 2010 and 22% in 2011; Corrs Chambers Wesgarth’s graduate recruitment will drop by 25% in 2010; Deacons’ graduate recruitment will drop by a whopping 49% in 2010; DLA Phillips Fox’s graduate recruitment will drop by 7% in 2010 and remain steady in 2011; Mallesons Stephen Jaques’ graduate recruitment will drop by 25% in 2010; and Freehills’ graduate recruitment will drop by approximately 11% in 2010.
