Minter Ellison’s ‘Bomber Bower’ & The Papuan New Guinean Teenage Footballer

On Friday last week we reported the revelation that Minter Ellison partner Scott Reid (in his capacity as an emissary of the AFL’s mission to PNG) is presently sharing a house with Papua New Guinean teenager, David Meli. The AFL footballing future of David Meli is presently the subject of an apparent spat between the Essendon and Gold Coast Football Clubs.

Bombers celebrate the new addition

We queried in that post whether the Essendon Football Club Chairman Ray Horsburgh, who also happens to feature prominently in two companies on Minter Ellison’s client list, might have asked Scott Reid to encourage the teenage Meli to seriously consider Essendon Football Club proposal. Of course, we neither had nor have any evidence that the potential conflict between Scott Reid’s probable desire to keep Minter Ellison clients happy and teenage Meli’s expectation that Reid would offer impartial advice on his AFL future (if he were asked, which we do not know), actually played out.

However, we did receive yesterday some intriguing comments about another Minter Ellison figure, David Bower, who also featured in last week’s story. Bower, we noted, shares the same Minter Ellison Gold Coast office as fellow partner Scott Reid and has previously worked for CSR Limited; ie the same company where Essendon Football Club Chairman Ray Horsburgh is a director.  The Minters spy sent us the following comments in relation to Friday’s story:

Bit of a stretch…needs a bit more before the rats start to smell – maybe build on the fact that Bowers goes by the nickname of ‘Bomber’ – an obvious Essendon connection.

We invite comments from Reid and Bower. Send the Firm Spy your news and views!
