Freehills Cutbacks an Effort to Reduce Carbon Emissions, Not Save Partner Dollars

A few weeks ago, the sleepy New South Welsh hamlet of Bunadoon voted to ban bottled water.

A Freehills summer clerk reacts violently to cutbacks

Local businessman and Bundy on Tap organiser Huw Kingston said almost 400 people turned up to the Bundanoon Memorial Hall, with only two casting dissenting votes.

Whilst the Firm Spy strongly supports the initiative to lower carbon emissions, we query the motives of the Freehills partnership in implementing a very similar measure recently in its offices. As reported in BRW (16/7):

last year the firm [Freehills] stopped buying 100,000 water bottles a year for clients and staff… “So there are 100,000 water bottles that wont be sent to landfill or recycled. Secondly, there’s a huge saving… we see the cost benefit as ancillary – the important thing is reducing our carbon footprint.”

Hmmm … what other “cutbacks” might reduce carbon emissions? Locking the stationary closet? Turning off the bathroom lights? Getting rid of frills and fripperies? Cutting learning and development budgets? Or, heaven forbid, a few less booze-fuelled parties for the summer clerks?
