We reported earlier in the week the incredible rumour that Clayton Utz graduates were informed (prior to accepting graduate offers, we think) that they would receive pay rises after completing rotations, only for partners to later dodgily resile from that claim.

Yes Way!

This revelation, if it is true, would most certainly strike a blow to Clayton Utz graduate recruitment moving forward. But this rumour pales into insignificance when contrasted with the gobsmacking rumour we received from an anonymous Clutz spy yesterday:

…despite being regularly told that graduates are exempt from meeting billable targets for the duration of our graduate program there was 1 grad in the Sydney office who was actually sacked and can you guess why? Well of course, for not meeting billable hours. Of course this grad was sacked before the other grads were made redundant earlier this yr. I can only assume HR in Sydney decided to make people redundant rather than sack them because CU settled the matter after an IR claim was filed against them. Unable to change firms atm I would strongly recommend to current law students to avoid the Sydney CU Graduate program - I wish I’d gone to Freehills! HR are horrible and you can’t trust anything your told about this program.

Yes … we’re shocked too!

Not only has Clutz recently been associated with an alleged fraudster, been caught up in rumours of graduate salary dodginess, and been accused of ‘Claytons Redundancies’, but now this!
