An anonymous spy sends word of trouble at Tress Cox. Sounds like the full gamut of fairly typical issues for semi-integrated national firms: partnership squabbles, uninspiring leadership, brain drain, penny pinching and more:
The melbourne office of TressCox Lawyers is in dire trouble. Run by a Managing Partner that often is gone by 2pm each day the firm is falling falling falling. Recently with the
departure of Litigation partner Phillip Jones to a small specialist practice,Senior Associate and one of the pillars in the M&A team David Woodford departing for O/S taking with him a very respected Health Lit lawyer, the entire and might I say very profitable and respected Commercial Property team has now jumped ship to join HWL Ebsworth. The departures are happening fast and steady, a Litigation SA departing, a Junior IP lawyer departing, a junior B&C Lawyer departing, the list goes on. It will be interesting to watch and see if anyone is there by the end of the year.

Read on if you care.
Our spy thinks the problems are caused by a siloed approach to clients and management:
Could have something to do with the fact that each partner runs their own team as their own business and does not refer or share clients, in fact the firm has only 1 shared client nationally!!! Paying below market salaries, being governed by a board made up purely of active partners and spending a considerable amount of $$$$ on in-house catering has ensured that the firm is definitely fatter around the waistline, but not in the profits or in its headcount! uh oh
At least the food is good. Food fight anyone?
Any Tress Cox Troublemakers care to spill the beans?

To be fair, the Melbourne managing partner who is gone by 2pm actually arrives at 3am. everyday.
What a load of rubbish, the managing partner gets in at 8am sometimes 9am.
