Thanks to the anonymous spy who emailed us the following tip on the weekend:
Dudley Stow’s President’s Report from this month’s ‘Brief’ (Law Society Journal): “At the time of writing the Articled Clerk Recruitment Monitoring Scheme which had been supported by the various law schools, students and firms has, I am informed, collapsed. As a result of the collapse, students are experiencing considerable anguish and anxiety. Students have been given deadlines to accept offers of articles before the offer date agreed upon under the scheme. As you can imagine in the current economic circumstances, students are feeling pressured to accept offers they may not otherwise accept. I regret that this has occurred and the Society will work hard to re-establish the scheme in 2010. It will require the trust and firm agreement of all parties”.
It is interesting to note that as well as being a member of the WA Law Society Council, Mr Dudley Stow is a consultant to Freehills; a post he has held since 1972. Yes, Freehills; the same firm which we have twice reported is rumoured to have precipitated the ‘collapse’ of the scheme noted above.
Let’s hope Dudley’s consultancy work for Freehills isn’t to blame.
