Clayton Utz Appoints Lateral Senior Associates as Graduate Pay is Lifted (Finally!)

Among the reported measures defection-ridden national top-tier firm Clayton Utz has taken to rebuild its practice has been to promote senior associates to the partnership and apparently to promote lawyers to senior associateship.

However, questions are being asked by Clutz lawyers as to whether the firm will recognise the hard work of its own junior lawyers, rather than sourcing SAs laterally. As reported by an anonymous Clutz spy last week:

Clutz partnership mind-reading

I heard that in one particular group at Clayton Utz, of the four Lawyers promoted to Senior Associate, all were from Lateral entry ( 1 had been on a 2 year leave, working for a firm in England. So not only do they sack there graduates, if you are loyal to the firm and stay for 5 years you will not be promoted….

Meanwhile, in response to our report that Clutz had lifted its pay freeze came the following comments from another Clutz spy:

This is my first post. I am a graduate at Sydney Clutz. As you reported our pay reviews were brought forward to 1 April 2010. We just found out the outcome of this review and all of the graduates received a nice pay rise (for my intake well over 10%). This brings us up to being competitive with the other top-tier firms. Just thought I should share some good news.

Yes, it is indeed good news. But a little late, don’t you think? Clutz grads were reportedly dodged by partners on pay THREE times last year!
